Convicted of Murder Without The Body

April 28, 2008

In Oakland, a software designer, Hans Reiser, was convicted of the first degree murder of his wife, Nina Reiser. What makes this case interesting is the evidence brought in during the trial. Or, the evidence NOT brought in. Nina Reiser went missing after she dropped the kids off at his house over a year ago. She was never seen again. Her body, often the most important piece of evidence in a murder case, was never found.

The prosecution alleged he killed his wife amid a terrible custody battle. The defense suggested that she was stil alive living in Russia near her home town.

Obviously, the jury accepted his guilt without the evidence. Anyone headed to Russia?

Ashley Dupre Sues Girls Gone Wild

April 28, 2008

Ashley Dupre, also known as former New York governor Eliot Spitzer’s favorite call girl, has filed a lawsuit against Joe Francis, founder and CEO of Girls Gone Wild. As was reported previously, Francis and his crew met her when she was only 17 in a Miami social spot. They got her drunk and convinced her to do what girls are known to do on Girls Gone Wild videos: flashing her breasts on camera. She claims that being drunk and young led to a decision that she did not, at the time, realize would have such great magnitude later.

Confessions From Austrian Horror House

April 28, 2008

A man has confessed to imprisoning his daughter for 24 years in a windowless cell with a soundproofed door. He also fathered seven children with her including three who “never saw sunlight,” police said Monday.

Now 73, the man originally called Josef F also told investigators that he burned the body of one of the children when the infant died shortly after birth, said Franz Polzer, head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs.

“We are being confronted with an unfathomable crime,” Interior Minister Guenther Platter said.

The daughter and original victim, now 42, had been missing since 1984. She was found by police in Amstetten on Saturday evening after receiving a tip. She and the children have since been placed under psychiatric care in an undisclosed location.

Authorities on Monday released several photos showing parts of the cramped basement cell. The cell was comprised of a small bathroom and a narrow passageway leading to a tiny bedroom. Investigators said an electronic keyless-entry system kept the victims from escaping from the cell, which was made of solid concrete.

After initially withholding his full name, police released the man’s name along with a photograph at a news conference Monday. He briefly appeared in court Monday. He is being held in a pre-trial detention.

“He admitted that he locked his daughter, who was 18 at the time, in the cellar, that he repeatedly had sex with her, and that he is the father of her seven children,” the head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs told The Associated Press.

Three of the surviving children lived with the grandparents and were registered with authorities. The other three – aged 19, 18 and 5 – were confined during their entire lives to the darkness of their cell, Polzer said.

Hans-Heinz Lenze, a senior local official, said the suspect’s wife apparently had “no idea” of what went on and was crushed by the news.

Guenter Pramreiter, a bakery owner in the neighborhood, told The Associated Press that the suspect and his wife would regularly buy bread and rolls, though never in large quantities.

After receiving a tip, police picked up the 42-year-old mother/victim, authorities identified as Elisabeth F., and her father on Saturday in the vacnity f the hospital.

Police said she appeared “greatly disturbed” during questioning. She agreed to talk only after authorities assured her she would no longer have to have contact with her father and that her children would be cared for.

On Sunday evening, police reported that investigators had found the area where Elisabeth and three of the children were held captive. Investigators said the rooms were at most 5 feet 6 inches feet high. The area had a TV and small hot plates for cooking.

In a chronology of events outlined in a police statement to authorities, Elisabeth said her father began sexually abusing her when she was 11, and in 1984, sedated, handcuffed, and locked her in the cellar.

Police said a letter written by Elisabeth had apparently surfaced a month after her disappearance, asking her parents not to search for her. Her father would later claim she had run off with a cult.

Iranian Official Warns Against Barbie Dolls

April 28, 2008

A top Iranian judiciary official has warned against the “destructive” cultural and social consequences of importing Barbie dolls and other Western toys.

Prosecutor General Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi said in an official letter to Vice President Parviz Davoudi that the Western toys was a “danger” that needed to be stopped.

Iranian markets have been inundated with smuggled Western toys in recent years partly due to a dramatic rise in purchasing power as a result of huge increase in oil revenues.

In Monday’s letter, Najafabadi called for a crackdown on the smuggling of these toys which threatened Iranian culture.

Old Man Drives Past Airport Security Onto Runway

April 28, 2008

Authorities are questioning a 73-year-old driver who sped through a security gate at Miami International Airport and ended up on one of the main runways.

The man has not been identified. Police say he may have been disoriented when he drove passed security Friday morning. He was quickly detained by police.

Airport spokesman Greg Chin says no flights or landings were delayed. Although the runway was closed for a short time, he says the airport’s other three runways were not affected.

Miley Cyrus Embarrassed About Posing Almost Nude

April 28, 2008

miley4.jpg

Miley Cyrus and her parents must be feeling the heat from the Disney Channel.

While the 15-year-old star has remained mum on the numerous slutty pics of her floating around the Internets, she IS speaking out about that racy new Vanity Fair photo.

And she’s not happy!

“I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.”

The pics in question were taken by renowned photog Annie Leibovitz.

The shots of Slutty Miley include photos of the tween star wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet, looking over her shoulder with her back exposed.

It’s as if she’s saying, “Come take me!”

The Disney Channel, which makes hundreds of millions off Hannah Montana, was also critical of Vanity Fair.

“Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines,” a network statement said.

Vanity Fair, for their part, defended its position.

“Miley’s parents and/or minders were on the set all day,” the magazine says. “Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley.”

Ohhh, snap.

Miley just got owned by Vanity Fair!

It gets worse for Cyrus!

In a caption released by Vanity Fair with the photo last week, Slutty Miley expressed her comfort with how the apparently topless picture turned out.

“I think it’s really artsy,” she told the magazine at the time. “It wasn’t in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That’s what she wanted me to do, and you can’t say no to Annie.”

We’ve got to hand it to Miley. She is smarter than we thought!

Disney may not be loving this attention, but we’re sure SHE is.

Highest Oil Prices Ever

April 28, 2008

Oil prices hit an all-time high, near $120 a barrel, Monday after a weekend refinery strike closed a pipeline system that delivers a third of Britain’s North Sea oil to refineries in the UK.

Workers at the Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland walk out Sunday at the start of a two-day strike

The shutdown comes amid supply outages in Nigeria that have helped to support oil against a strengthening dollar.

“We’ve got a confluence of a number of events that have really disrupted crude oil supply,” said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore. “That’s what’s driving oil to a new record even though the U.S. dollar actually strengthened a bit.”

Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose to a record $119.93 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract eased back to $118.96 a barrel by late afternoon in Singapore, up 44 cents from Friday’s close of $118.52.

BP Sunday shut down the Forties Pipeline System that carries more than 700,000 barrels of oil a day to the U.K. because of a 48-hour walkout by employees at a refinery in central Scotland.

Workers walked out of the Grangemouth refinery vowing not to give ground in their dispute with refinery owner Ineos over plans to close a generous pension scheme to new employees.

Ineos chief executive Tom Crotty said it could take a week for the plant to return to production once the strike ends on Tuesday. BP said its pipeline could be up and running within 24 hours.

BP’s Kinneil plant, the onshore processing center for the pipeline system, is powered from the Grangemouth site.

“With the refinery being shut down, it will affect supplies from the North Sea and that has a potentially significant impact,” said David Moore, a commodity strategist with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney. “That comes at the same time that there’s production disruptions from Nigeria so the combined effect of those is the immediate factor that’s put pressure on oil prices.”

How Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears Are Alike

April 28, 2008

From what Amy Winehouse’s father said, he would like to take over her life and put her in a mental ward, no unlike the moves of Britney Spear’s father recently following months of irratic behavior and legal problems related to custody of her children.

Amy’s father told the UK’s News of the World:

“I want her sectioned (institutionalized). The situation is getting out of control. I want her off the street. I don’t think being somewhere for six weeks is going to cure her problems. I think it needs far more radical measures. We will take the bull by the horns and deal with it. I’ve been on the phone to Amy’s manager in Los Angeles and he’s starting things rolling. They are going to be speaking to doctors, psychologists and everything else. I want Amy to be somewhere where she will be safe and where no harm can come to her. Obviously as her dad I will try and do what’s best for her. Unfortunately, what I think is best for Amy and what she thinks is best for her are two different things.”

Amy’s dad also confirmed the rumors that Amy’s been CHEATING on husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, with a guy named Alex Haynes — her manager’s assistant!

He is angry about the extramarital affair, but he said Amy was to blame:

“I am shocked. His job was to look after Amy. I asked him to stay with Amy while she was recording… This was not part of the job! I don’t like infidelity. But Alex could be the victim in all this. I can’t ever imagine Alex seducing Amy. He looks like Clark Kent. It was clearly the other way round and Amy had her wicked way with him…”

Grand Theft Auto IV… REVIEW

April 28, 2008

I was rolling through the neon deluge of a place very like Times Square the other night in my Landstalker sport utility vehicle, listening to David Bowie’s “Fascination” on the radio. The glittery urban landscape was almost enough to make me forget about the warehouse of cocaine dealers I was headed uptown to rip off…. (OH YEAH!)
